Teachings of Islam make peace a right for all, Al-Azhar Grand Imam to Swiss Ambassador
Al-Azhar Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, affirmed that Al-Azhar approach is based on diversity, pluralism and respect of the others, and that dialogue between adherents of various religions is not new to Al-Azhar. Al-Azhar message focuses on the idea of dialogue, whether it is among the adherents of Islamic sects or between the followers of Islam in relation to other faiths. His Eminence added that the teachings of Islam make everyone entitled to peace. He continued that Al-Azhar has made deliberate efforts in the field of dialogue among the adherents of various religions, and it welcomes all sorts of cooperation that serve the world peace, religious tolerance, and acceptance of the others.
During his meeting with Mr. Paul Garnier, the Swiss Ambassador to Egypt, Al-Azhar Grand Imam explained that religion came to protect the human soul from deviation and guide it in accordance with the principles of goodness and tolerance. Al-Azhar took important steps in the field of dialogue and established the Egyptian Family House for dialogue between the Muslims and the Christians. The Council of Muslim Elders, which is based on the idea of dialogue among the Muslim scholars, is meant to discuss issues and solve problems. Then, Al-Azhar cooperated with the World Council of Churches, the Church of Canterbury, and the Vatican. This cooperation resulted in the Human Fraternity Document, which represents a beacon of tolerance and acceptance of the others, as it developed effective solutions to contemporary global problems.
The Swiss Ambassador, for his part, said that he is interested in the field of dialogue among the adherents of various religions because of the importance of this matter in Switzerland. He added that they have established in Switzerland an Islamic Center affiliated with the University of Freiburg. There is a dialogue committee in Switzerland that has been working on establishing community dialogue between the Muslims and others for 15 years. The Ambassador also pointed out Switzerland's interest in establishing good relations with Al-Azhar to benefit from its efforts and experience in the field of training imams and introducing the correct message of Islam. The Ambassador also delivered an invitation to Al-Azhar Grand Imam to participate in a conference for dialogue held by the priests of Switzerland.
