Grand Imam participates in launching Religious Leaders’ Compact on Education
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb participated with religious leaders from around the world in launching the religious leaders compact titled, “Towards a Global Compact for Education.” The compact takes into account the challenges and expectations for education and the teacher at the present time. Through this global compact too, religious leaders expressed their appreciation for the efforts, dedication and sacrifices made by teachers around the world in performing their noble mission of raising young people, instilling positive values in them, and setting good example for children. The compact also included an encouraging message from religious leaders to teachers to continue their efforts despite all the difficulties and challenges facing them at the present time, which were exacerbated by the Corona pandemic. In view of the common and growing interest in the education crisis today and the entrenched awareness that religions are the sources of basic humanitarian values, religious leaders hope that political and government leaders will re-evaluate the situation of teachers around the world. Hence, they are expected to adopt different policies commensurate with the difficult challenges teachers face, especially the adoption of a fair pay policy, ensuring better working conditions for teachers, and recognizing the real value and status of teachers, believing that the future of humanity depends greatly on the quality of teachers. The compact also included a recommendation that the humans should be placed at the center of every educational process, developing the students’ abilities to establish relationships with others, instead of a culture of exclusion and marginalization. Recommendations also include listening to the students and discussing all issues with them, especially with regard to respecting women’s dignity and building a future of justice and peace. Besides, the compact instructs teachers to empower the family, collaborate with and enlighten other educational groups to be particularly welcoming of the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals in society. This should also involve searching for new ways to understand the economy and politics and harness them to serve all humanity, and to teach more environmentally-respectful lifestyles through an inclusive environmental perspective.
His Eminence the Grand Imam participated in the Summit of Religious Leaders under the title “Towards a Global Compact for Education”, organized by the Global Compat for Education committee with the Congregation for Catholic Education, in the presence of a constellation of religious leaders and their representatives around the world. It aims at promoting a "Global Compact for Education" that takes into account the current challenges to education and the teacher in our time. This meeting coincides with the World Teachers' Day, which falls on October 5 each year, the date set by the UNESCO since 1994 to celebrate the teacher.
