Yesterday, Wednesday, Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah, King of Malaysia, named His Eminence Prof. Dr. Ahmed At-Tayyeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, "the Islamic Personality for the Year 1442 AH / 2020 AC", in a celebration of the New Hijri Year. The celebration was attended by the His Excellency Prime Minister of Malaysia Muhyiddin Yassin, H.E Datuk Dr. Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri, Minister of Religious Affairs of Malaysia, members of the government, and representatives of a number of countries. Singling out the Grand Imam for this award comes as a fruit of his efforts, his good impact and his dedication to serving the causes of the Muslim nation and the Muslims around the world, the important role that he plays in sustaining the bonds of cooperation between Egypt and Malaysia, and his keenness to maintain Al-Azhar's communication with its alumni from various world countries. The award, which was received by Mr. Gamal Abdel Rahim Metwally, Egypt’s Ambassador to Malaysia, on behalf of the Grand Imam, given the exceptional COVID-travel restriction, is one of the major awards offered annually by Malaysia. It is awarded to internationally respected personalities who play prominent roles in serving Islam and the Muslims.
