The Grand Imam never abandoned the Palestinian cause. He kept promoting it in international circles in his belief in the justness of the cause and the obligation to sustain it. Among his memorable stances is that in August 2010, he refused to visit Jerusalem under the authority of the Zionist entity. He then stated to the Middle East News Agency that the visit of Muslims and Arabs to Jerusalem at the present time does not serve any interest.
In February of the year (2013), His Eminence the Grand Imam invested in the convening of the Islamic Summit in asking the assembled leaders to take a positive and unified stance towards the Palestinian cause.
In June 2015, he called on the world peace-loving countries to support just solutions to the Palestinian cause, against the background of his meeting with Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash, advisor to the Palestinian President.
The Grand Imam gave a historic speech in in December 8, 2017, in which he said, “How can I sit with those who grant what they do not have in the first place to those who do not deserve it”. In that official statement, he refused to receive the then US Vice President, Mike Pence, at the Headquarters of Al-Azhar, against the background of The US administration’s decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem and its claim that Jerusalem is the capital of the Zionist occupation entity. He thus announced his categorical rejection of this decision, describing it as “reckless and false in the view of the Islamic Sharia and the law,” adding that it represents an unacceptable falsification of history and a tampering with the future of peoples. He also called Al-Azhar Council of Senior Scholars and the Muslim Council of Elders for an emergency meeting to discuss the consequences of this step. Moreover, he called for holding an international conference in support of Al-Quds (Jerusalem). The conference, which was held in mid-January 2018, witnessed remarkable global participation, and its concluding statement stressed that "Al-Quds is the eternal capital of the independent State of Palestine, which all must work hard to officially declare, and to procure internationally recognition of it." The conference also adopted the Grand Imam’s call to declare 2018 the “Year of Al-Quds.” Meanwhile, the Grand Imam directed that the Friday sermon at Al-Azhar Mosque be devoted to defending the Palestinian cause and the sanctities in Jerusalem. The stances of the Grand Imam, which aim to support the Palestinian cause are limitless. They have contributed to the formation of a global public opinion that is more understanding of this cause, as described by the Chief Justice of Palestine when he said, “The stance of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar towards the Palestinian cause has a considerable impact on leaders and presidents.”
