His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, received Ambassador Amr Abbas, the new Egyptian Ambassador to Uruguay. During the meeting, the Grand Imam underscored Al-Azhar’s keenness to present the true image of Islam, which some people try to distort with the purpose of disseminating Islamophobia in Western societies. According to the Grand Imam, Al-Azhar is also keen to cooperate with everyone in confronting extremist ideas promoted by terrorist organizations. Meanwhile, Al-Azhar is ready to offer scholarships to Muslim students in Uruguay to study sound thought at Al-Azhar colleges.

For his part, His Excellency the Egyptian Ambassador to Uruguay expressed his appreciation for the role of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif in promoting moderate Islamic thought, and for the Grand Imam’s efforts in establishing the values of peace, tolerance, and dialogue. He also asserted that his visit to the Headquarters of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif is meant to acquaint with the vision of Al-Azhar University on redressing misconceptions and confronting extremist ideas.
