Returning to Al-Azhar approach is necessary to confront extremist thought, delegation of Al-Azhar Graduates in Libya
The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, received a delegation of Libyan imams and preachers after completing a course organized by Al-Azhar for training imams, preachers, and members of the branch of the World Organization for Al-Azhar Graduates in Libya.
The Grand Imam said that Al-Azhar efforts to support Libya during its current crisis and to confront violence and terrorism stem from the responsibility it has shouldered for more than a thousand years to preserve the moderation of Islam and promote its tolerant teachings to all Muslims in the world.
His Eminence praised the efforts of the Libyan branch of the World Organization for Al-Azhar Graduates, pointing out that Al-Azhar considers the Libyan graduates its ambassadors who carry the message of moderation and renounce violence and terrorism, stressing Al-Azhar’s readiness to provide all forms of academic and missionary support for the organization.
The Libyan imams and Islamic preachers, on their part, affirmed that the Azharite approach is prevalent among most of the people of Libya, and it preserved the Libyan social fabric from disintegration for many decades. They indicated that the slipping of some strange ideas - contrary to Al-Azhar method - to the Libyan society is what caused the situation in which Libyan citizens are fighting each other.
They added that confronting extremist thought and ending the conflict in Libya can only be done by returning to Al-Azhar curriculum because it enhances pluralism and acceptance of difference. They emphasized that Al-Azhar's missionary efforts in Libya and the support of the branch of the World Organization for Al-Azhar Graduates, have contributed to curbing extremism and immunizing young people against being deceived by the ideas of terrorist groups.
