Looking forward to more cooperation with Al-Azhar, ICRC President
Al-Azhar Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, received Mr. Ronald Ofteringer, Head of International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) delegation in Egypt.
The Grand Imam said that Al-Azhar is always ready to cooperate with all humanitarian and relief organizations, extending a helping hand to the afflicted, the needy and the injured. He stressed that the lack of respect for divine directives is the cause of the spread of conflicts because in their guidance religions carry peace for all human beings.
His Eminence said that Al-Azhar believes that the real beginning to achieve peace is to achieve it first among the followers of religions, and to acknowledge the innocence of all religions from violence and terrorism. He added that this is what he agreed upon with Pope Francis throughout the period of their joint work, embodying it in the Human Fraternity Document that they drafted together for the sake of humanity and global peace.
The Head of ICRC delegation in Egypt expressed his institution's aspiration for further cooperation with Al-Azhar because its moderate approach and rhetoric is the only solution to the challenges and problems facing the contemporary world such as wars. He praised the Human Fraternity Document for containing many provisions that help them and other humanitarian organizations carry out their humanitarian tasks and serve the victims of wars to the fullest.
