Media responsible for pushing progress of African continent, the Grand Imam to a delegation of African media professionals
Al-Azhar Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, received a delegation of African media professionals and journalists at Al-Azhar headquarters.
The Grand Imam said that the media has a great responsibility to advance “the Dark Continent”, contribute to reducing violence and extremism, and raise awareness of their dangers among the peoples of the continent, stressing that Al-Azhar plays its role in Africa out of its duty towards it.
He added that the media is the most important institution that contributes to saving people if it adheres to professional media ethics. HE praised a number of positive experiences that helped form an informed public opinion in which the media had a major role. However, the media could contribute to the destruction of nations and their desolation if it deviated from professionalism and ethics.
The Grand Imam explained that Al-Azhar is fulfilling its duty towards the African continent as it receives more than five thousand African students, and sends many medical and relief convoys to provide the necessary aid to the peoples of the continent. In addition, Al-Azhar trains non-Arab imams and sends many of his graduates as envoys to spread the tolerance and moderation of Islam in African countries.
The delegation members, for their part, said they were pleased with the Grand Imam’s reception, stressing their pride in Al-Azhar and its Grand Imam, and their adherence to their African identity. They called on Al-Azhar to have media platforms in all languages that contribute to strengthening Al-Azhar’s efforts to combat extremism and spread peace in Africa and the world.
