Tunisian President and Al-Azhar Grand Imam agree to form a scientific committee to serve Islamic culture
Al-Azhar Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, received His Excellency President Kais Saied, President of the Republic of Tunisia, at Al-Azhar headquarters today, Sunday afternoon, to discuss the most prominent issues of the Arab and Muslim world, and aspects of cooperation between Al-Azhar and the Republic of Tunisia in scientific and cultural fields. In the name of Al-Azhar and its scholars, the Grand Imam welcomed the Tunisian President to Al-Azhar and said that Al-Azhar, its scholars and students were pleased with President Kais Saied’s visit to Al-Azhar. He emphasized that President Kais Saied is a dear guest of Egypt and Al-Azhar and that Tunisia has a special place in the hearts of every Egyptian. He stressed that the Tunisian President's tours in the streets of Cairo reflect the strength of Egyptian-Tunisian relationship, which is an continuation of a long history that brought the two countries together. Whoever reads history will find a strong interdependence between the Egyptian and Tunisian peoples for many centuries. The Grand Imam stated that it began with the transfer of the capital of the Fatimids from Mahdia to Cairo. Students and scholars from Tunisia came to Al-Azhar, and they have become part of its fabric since ancient times, led by the Tunisian social philosopher Ibn Khaldun, who rose to the teaching chair at Al-Azhar University and took over the position of the Maliki Judge of Egypt. Other important figures from Tunisia included Sheikh Muhammad Al-Khidr Hussein, who assumed the office of Al-Azhar Grand Imam, the great popular poet Bayram Al-Tunisi, and many others who made scientific efforts that contributed to the service of the Islamic culture, pointing out that the Islamic culture has been well-established in Tunisia since ancient times. His Eminence expressed Al-Azhar’s readiness to form a joint scientific committee to serve the Islamic culture and to strengthen scientific and cultural relations between Al-Azhar and Al-Zaytoonah University in a way that suits the nobility and history of these two universities. Al-Azhar allocates scholarships to Tunisian students and trains imams within the framework of Al-Azhar International Academy Program for Training Imams and Preachers (AIAPTIP). This program trains imams from different continents to promote moderate thought, combat extremist ideology, and protect the security and stability of countries. It demonstrates Al-Azhar’s readiness to prepare joint curricula that address contemporary issues. The Grand Imam presented the Tunisian President with a copy of the Human Fraternity Document and the Book of the Memory of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif.
