The Grand Imam addressing the Ambassador of the Netherlands: Strong relations between Al-Azhar and the world churches reflect the tolerance of religions
Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, stressed that Al-Azhar's approach is based on respecting the other, as well as on diversity and pluralism, and that the strong relationships between Al-Azhar and the world churches reflect the tolerance of religions and their sublime mission. “Nevertheless, universal peace today faces a major dilemma, i.e., the so called arms economy that is based on the manufacture of hatred and the ignition of conflicts to achieve illusory profits at the expense of the blood of innocent people in different parts of the world”. He added that Al-Azhar always appreciates any efforts towards achieving universal peace and respect for beliefs and doctrines.
The Dutch Ambassador said that he greatly appreciates Al-Azhar's efforts in enhancing tolerance, dialogue and brotherhood among the followers of different religions, as this would promote peace in societies and rapprochement among nations. He pointed out that he follows up with Al-Azhar conferences and the Grand Imam's foreign tours, affirming that he is always looking forward to participating in future events to be held by Al-Azhar to promote dialogue among the followers of various religions, along with promoting citizenship and pluralism.
