Grand Imam of Al Azhar sends his condolences to President and people of Philippines for victims of Hurricane Ray
Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, sent his sincere condolences to the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and the Philippine people for the victims of the Hurricane Ray which hit the Philippines that claimed the lives of more than 200 people, injured hundreds, and displaced more than 300,000. HE also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, and his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured, maintaining Al-Azhar's solidarity with the Philippines in its humanitarian crisis. During his meeting with Ambassador Ezzedine Tajo, Ambassador of the Philippines to Cairo, on Tuesday, His Eminence stressed that Al-Azhar will never hesitate to perform its role of raising awareness about the climate change crisis resulting in the troubles our planet is now witnessing, including hurricanes, floods and storms that have given rise to human misery. He also pointed out that Al-Azhar University concluded yesterday its third scientific conference on Environment and Sustainable Development under the title “Climate Change: Challenges and Solutions”, and it will continue to raise awareness about the dangers of this global crisis affecting humans, animals, plants and inanimate objects. On his part, the Philippine Ambassador conveyed the greetings of President Rodrigo, and the Philippine Foreign Minster to the Grand Imam, expressing his appreciation for Al-Azhar's solidarity with the State of the Philippines in the crisis of the current hurricane that hit the country, and applauding the role of Al-Azhar and its scholars in raising awareness about the climate change crisis and confronting behaviors that are harmful to the environment. The meeting involved a discussion of the future of international students enrolled at Al-Azhar, and ways to equip them with necessary skills for the Philippine labor market, the challenges facing the Muslim community in the Philippines, and the opportunities to enrol Philippine imams at the specialized training program at Al-Azhar International Academy for the Training of Imams and Preachers which aims to combat extremism and promote enlightened moderate thought.
