His Eminence the Grand Imam Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, received H.E. Tabari Vázquez, President of Uruguay, and the accompanying delegation, during their visit to Cairo. The Grand Imam welcomed the President of Uruguay to Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, stressing that his visit to Egypt sustains the bonds of cooperation between the two countries in all economic and commercial fields. He indicated that Al-Azhar, as a more-than-1060-year-old institution, builds its curricula on intellectual pluralism and acceptance of the other. Through teaching the different schools, it immunizes Azharite students from partisan exclusivism. This also exposes the fallacious allegations promoted by extremist groups. 

His Excellency the President of Uruguay expressed his thanks and appreciation of Al-Azhar’s role in consolidating the culture of peaceful coexistence, and its efforts in establishing and strengthening world peace among different countries and peoples. He then asserted that his meeting with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar is useful in working to promote peace and the values of brotherhood and love, and in renouncing racism and all kinds of violence and terrorism. Meanwhile, HE indicated that he was keen to follow up with the Grand Imam’s meeting with the Pope of the Vatican at the Headquarters of Al-Azhar and to declare his support for their joint work meant to establish the values of peace and coexistence.
