Al-Azhar Grand Imam receives Sudanese Ambassador, discusses expanding Al-Azhar support for Sudanese people
His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb received today, Tuesday, at Al-Azhar headquarters, General Staff Engineer Emad El-Din Mustafa Adawi, the Sudanese Ambassador to Egypt, to discuss ways to enhance scientific and cultural support for the people of Sudan.
The Grand Imam emphasized the deep-rooted ties between Al-Azhar and Sudan, noting that these relations were historically strengthened by the establishment of the "the Riwaq of El-Sinariyah" at Al-Azhar Mosque, a section dedicated to students from Sudan. His Eminence further explained that the number of Sudanese students studying at Al-Azhar is approximately 10,000, including 888 on scholarships. Al-Azhar offers 220 scholarships annually to Sudanese students to enroll at Al-Azhar University.
The Grand Imam also affirmed Al-Azhar’s full solidarity with Sudan – a country that is dear to every Muslim and Arab – in its great tragedy and in the humanitarian situation there. He called on the masses of the Sudanese people to prioritize the voice of unity, elevate the spirit of brotherhood, stand together in solidarity in a way that serves the higher interest of Sudan, stand against the plans of division, and preserve Sudan’s unity, stability and territorial integrity.
The Sudanese ambassador, for his part, expressed his pleasure at meeting the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar and Sudan's appreciation for Al-Azhar's leading role in disseminating the true teachings of Islam, promoting its moderate approach, supporting Muslims worldwide academically and culturally, and caring for Sudanese students studying at Al-Azhar. He emphasized that Al-Azhar is a prominent religious authority for the Sudanese people, stating, “We appreciate your concern for the Sudanese students studying at Al-Azhar, and we look forward to the establishment of institutes affiliated with Al-Azhar in Sudan to serve Sudanese citizens who wish to instill moderation in their children.”
