Al-Azhar Grand Imam, Prof. Ahmad At-Tayyeb, said that the name of Allah Al-Muˀmin (the Believer) is mentioned in the Holy Qur’an and in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and it is agreed upon by the consensus of Muslims. It is derived from either ˀamn (security) or ˀīmān (faith). ˀAmn (security) means providing peace, security, and protection from the believer to the other party. ˀῙmān (faith), on the other hand, means to believe someone just as Joseph’s brothers said to their father, “You would not believe us, even though we are telling the truth” (Qur’an, 12: 17).
His Eminence indicated that Allah - Glory be to Him – is the Believer, who testified according to His eternal knowledge that there is no god but He, and so did the angels and those possessed of knowledge who witnessed to the same effect. Al-Muˀmin also means someone who grants security to others i.e. the one who provides safety, meaning that Allah - the Most High - secures His faithful servants from punishment on the Day of Resurrection.
During the tenth episode of his Ramadan program, Grand Imam At-Tayyeb Talk, His Eminence stated that Allah - Glory be to Him - sends Messengers and Prophets to people, and He sends with each Messenger a miracle with which the Almighty chooses and supports him. The miracles Allah brings to people at the hands of His Messengers are like divine attestation, so that they can be a proof against people in every time and place. Therefore, whoever believes in them will win and be saved, and whoever lies is exposed to torment for denying these divine arguments and miracles. Miracles provide evidence of the sincerity of prophecy. His Eminence pointed out that when every Prophet comes to his people, and says, “I am sent from Allah,” he has to establish evidence that convinces people to believe him.
His Eminence the Grand Imam pointed out that the Holy Qur’an includes social laws on the family, society, international relations, and the relationship of Muslims with others. If the world applied half of these laws, it would live in peace. In addition, the Qur’an was sent down into an Arab society known for eloquence, rhetoric, poetry and other arts related to language, as if the Almighty Allah was saying to them on the tongue of his Prophet: ‘I challenge you, O articulate and eloquent people, to come up with a surah or a verse like it’. That is why his people had been striving to get rid of him, yet no one was able to come up with one surah, the case which indicates the inimitability of the Holy Qur’an. This made many orientalists convert to Islam as a result of reading the Qur’an, or at least praise, exalt and glorify it.
His Eminence concluded his speech by explaining that the servant’s share of Allah’s name Al-Muˀmin is to believe in Allah, and to refrain from harming other people. The Prophet (pbuh) said, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let his neighbor be safe from his evil deeds.” In another hadith, our Noble Messenger (pbuh) swears by Allah three times that whoever harms his neighbor is not a real believer.
