His Eminence, Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, Al-Azhar Grand Imam (GI), received His Excellency Mr. Adel Al Asoomi, Speaker of the Arab Parliament, today, Wednesday, at Al-Azhar headquarters, to discuss ways of cooperation between Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and the Arab Parliament in preparing an Arab annual report to monitor efforts to combat extremism and terrorism.

 

His Eminence said that the state of disunity and weakness that has afflicted the Arab nation has made it lose its balance and its ability to face its successive crises, and whoever surveys the current Arab situation would suffer great pain for what has become of the situation of many Arab countries such as Palestine, Sudan, Libya, Iraq and other countries. He stressed that our Arab world will not regain its ability to rise, progress, and face its crises except by achieving the desired Arab unity and giving priority to the common Arab interest.

 

His Eminence stressed that our approach - as an Arab world – to the Palestinian cause did not reflect the resources, potential, wealth and diplomacy, pointing out that the major colonial powers were aware that their ability to control the region depends on our division and disunion, and that is the only way for them to achieve their plans to plunder our countries' wealth and achieve their progress.

 

The Grand Imam stressed that the extremist voices that labeled Islam with terrorism have been mute since the beginning of the Zionist terrorist aggression on Gaza, stressing that the Zionist calls to use nuclear weapons in Gaza, and likening the innocent Palestinians - who are defending their right to life and their homeland’s right to exist - to animals are the very essence of terrorism. He added that this Zionist terrorism enjoys unlimited global support for committing massacres and crimes against innocent Palestinians.

 

For his part, Mr. Asoomi expressed his appreciation for the great efforts made by His Eminence the Grand Imam in spreading the correct image of Islam, declaring: “We appreciate your efforts in spreading human tolerance and revealing the true face of Islam, and your wise words in various international forums are appreciated on a global scale. Your positions have confirmed that Al-Azhar bears the concerns of the Arab and Islamic nations upon itself, and we appreciate your role in supporting the nation’s causes, most notably the Palestinian cause.”

 

Mr. Asoomi added that the Arab Parliament seeks to strengthen its relationship with Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and to cooperate to demonstrate the correct image of Islam. Additionally, he presented a proposal to His Eminence to cooperate with the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism to prepare joint reports on combating terrorism and extremism and to prepare an annual Arab report to monitor efforts to combat them. His Eminence welcomed this proposal and directed its study and implementation mechanisms to be examined by the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism.
