Grand Imam celebrates Al-Azhar’s founding anniversary, calls on Muslims to unite
His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, celebrated the 1085th anniversary of the founding of Al-Azhar Mosque, which coincided with the seventh of the holy month of Ramadan. His Eminence confirmed in a post on his official pages on social media sites “Facebook” and “X (formerly Twitter)” that since the first prayer was held at the ancient Mosque of Al-Azhar, 1085 years ago, a journey of da’wah and civilization has begun, along with knowledge and justice, identity and patriotism. This journey influenced the Muslim world and bore its fruit, and hearts of all Muslims from all over the world yearn for it.
The Grand Imam addressed Muslims everywhere, urging them to prioritize unity and unify their stance. He also prayed to Allah Almighty to preserve Al-Azhar's historical role as a haven and a unifying authority for all segments of the Islamic nation.
It's worth noting that the Supreme Council of Al-Azhar, chaired by His Eminence the Grand Imam, approved in May 2018 the seventh of Ramadan as an annual day to commemorate the founding of Al-Azhar Mosque, the oldest university in the Islamic world and one of the most prominent symbols of moderation, balance, and intellectual and cultural influence throughout history.
