Man is always in need of Allah Almighty, for He alone is his Sufficient and Reckoner, the Grand Imam

The Grand Imam: The servant can manifest Allah's name Al-Haseeb by giving, being generous, and helping others.

His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders (MCE), Prof. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, said: “Allah’s name ‘Al-Haseeb’ (The Reckoner) is not given to a person if it is preceded by ‘the,’ so one cannot say: So-and-so is The-Reckoner. However, it is permissible to give this name to a person without the definite article ‘the’. This is because the definite article before the beautiful names of Allah denotes absolute perfection; therefore, it is not permissible to describe a person with it.” He pointed out that man is always in need of Allah Almighty; it is He, glory be to Him, who makes provision for him and makes available to him what helps him meet all his needs. He has made the earth and everything in it, the sky, and the seas available to him. Imam Al-Ghazali has eloquent words that summarize this in response to some people’s assumption that a mother’s milk can satisfy a child’s needs without Allah; he said: “Know that milk does not come from the mother, rather it and the mother are from Allah, glory be to Him, and from His bounty and generosity; He alone is the Sustainer of everyone. There exists nothing in all of creation that sustains anything else apart from Him, Exalted is He.”

His Eminence explained - during his talk today in the twelfth episode of the program "Imam Al-Tayyeb" that nothing can be sufficient, meaning: sufficient for something, as this is a superficial view; because all things are related to each other, and all of them ultimately depend on the power of Allah Almighty. He is the One who brings together the cause and the effect, and He is the One capable of creating an effect on things, and He is the Doer of everything in this vast universe. He added that the Ash'arites believe that the doer in this universe is limited to one entity, which is the Divine Essence, and all the effects that occur can only be caused by one doer, which is Allah Almighty. So much so that when fire touches cotton, for example, and it burns, it is not the fire that burns, but Allah who causes the burning. Allah Almighty is the Creator of the causes that, when combined with something, produce the effect.

His Eminence pointed out that the origin of the supplication in the face of oppression with “Hasbuna Allah wa ni'mal wakeel” (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs) is found in the verse: “Those who were warned, ‘Your enemies have mobilized their forces against you, so fear them,’ the warning only made them grow stronger in faith and they replied, ‘Allah alone is sufficient for us and He is the best Protector. So they returned with Allah’s favors and grace, suffering no harm” (Quran 3:173-174). This is a promise from Allah that no harm will touch those who say this supplication, provided they have heartfelt faith that Allah is indeed sufficient. He pointed out that a person needs such a supplication every morning so that Allah may suffice them from the evil of people, accidents, and other such things.

His Eminence concluded: The servant’s share of Allah’s name Al-Haseeb is actualized by giving and offering what he has in abundance. Al-Haseeb means “the Sufficient,” and this urges the servant to be generous to others. Al-Haseeb also means “the Accountant,” meaning that a person should constantly hold themselves accountable, in accordance with the saying of the Prophet (PBUH): “Hold yourselves to account before you are held accountable.” A person always holds themselves accountable at all times, so that they may realize the consequences of what they have done and what they have given. If they make a mistake, they should hasten to repent to Allah Almighty.
