The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Professor Ahmad At-Tayyeb has always lived close to the poor, the sick and the needy, and was never unaware of their pains and sorrows. So, they were always at the forefront of his priorities, as he always said, “I am a simple man who loves the poor and always lives among them.”
He translated this saying into practical steps in many situations, most prominently when he donated the value of the Human Fraternity Award granted to him by the United Arab Emirates in appreciation of his efforts in spreading world peace and promoting brotherhood among human beings. The award value was donated to the Egyptian House of Zakat and Charities, the Long Live Egypt Fund, Shifa Al-Orman Hospitals for Child Cancer Treatment, in addition to paying off some debts of insolvent persons. The Grand Imam also doubled the monthly subsidy for those entitled to Zakat from the Egyptian House of Zakat and Charities during Ramadan (in 2019). Likewise, he doubled the value of the monthly subsidy disbursed by the Zakat House to its beneficiaries on the occasion of the Prophet’s 1441 AH birth anniversary.
