Since instatement as a Grand Imam Al-Azhar, Prof. At-Tayyeb has focused on women's issues, denouncing all forms of marginalization, discrimination, violence and exploitation to which women are subjected around the world. In his speeches, articles and TV interviews, women issues featured prominently, and he especially advocated the rights of young girls. He thus rejected the marriage of underage girls, which – he believes “represent psychological, mental, and physical harm to the girls”. He also announced Al-Azhar's support for the law that sets the age of marriage for girls at 18 years. Likewise, he defended the right of a divorced mother to children’s custody and called for setting the age of (maternal) custody up to fifteen
The Grand Imam also called for controlling "the phenomenon of polygamy and divorce chaos," in a way that suits the Islamic law, and directed the allocation of a women’s fatwa section at the Al-Azhar International Center for Electronic Fatwas, to be run by a group of specialized female muftis to answer women's questions.
The Grand Imam’s support for women’s causes was not limited to the legal aspect. Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, in coordination with the National Council for Women, launched several electronic campaigns on social media sites, and organized lectures and seminars in schools, institutes, and public and private universities, all that aimed at raising awareness of women’s rights.
His Eminence also allocated a building in Al-Azhar University Al-Khanka Branch, Qalyubia, which occupies an area of 12 acres, to be the first Faculty of Physical Education for Girls at Al-Azhar University. This reflects the care given to Al-Azhar female students, and the keenness to confront the outdated customs and traditions that deprive girls of their natural rights. The study in the college commenced in the academic year 2017/2018. And in his capacity as the Chairman of the Egyptian House of Zakat and Charities (EHZH) Board of Trustees, the Grand Imam put settling the debts of insolvent women as an EHZH priority. Then, on December 23, 2014, he requested that the Ministers of Interior and Justice provide the EHZH with a list of convicted debtors in insolvency cases so that the EHZH may take appropriate measures to settle their debts.
Towards maintaining the stability of Egyptian families, and to confront the high rates of divorce and family disintegration, Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif launched the campaign “Do live Kindly with women” (September 2018) to raise awareness of the causes and risks of divorce, and to clarify the sound foundations for building a happy and cohesive family.
On April 16, 2018, Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif also established a "Family Reunion" office with the aim of reuniting Egyptian families and settling their disputes, as well as disseminating awareness and educating those who are about to marry, through seminars and courses conducted by Al-Azhar Family and Community Awareness Program.
The Grand Imam also stressed the importance of preserving women’s rights, especially their financial rights, and directed that awareness of women’s right to inheritance be raised. Therefore, the Al-Azhar Media Center, in cooperation with the Al-Azhar International Center for Electronic Fatwas, launched a campaign entitled “An Obligatory Share” to raise awareness of women's right to inheritance, the sinfulness of depriving them of their legitimate right to inheritance, and the consequences of such deprivation for the family and the society.
The Grand Imam has taken a decisive historical position towards the phenomenon of “sexual harassment” as one of the most dangerous social phenomena against women, thus defending their dignity, freedom, and rights. To him, sexual harassment may not be justified by the behavior or clothing of the woman.
The Grand Imam was not satisfied with merely condemning and denouncing this disgraceful act only, but he also confronted the misconceptions and the empty justifications on which the owners of weak souls rely in justifying their actions by holding the victim partly responsible for the guilt, and even considering the woman a major actor and motivator for this deviant behavior. Various international and local institutions and bodies concerned with women's rights have praised Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif's position on this phenomenon.
In the interest of His Eminence the Grand Imam to support and empower the Egyptian women, and to create suitable conditions for them to work, and in appreciation of their family conditions, His Eminence issued Resolution No. 32 of 2018, which stipulates the prohibition of transferring women from their workplaces, unless it is by their desire, except after presenting justifications, and personally approved by him. This decision came in order to relieve the female employees of Al-Azhar, and to reduce the burden of their traveling to places far from their homes in many areas.
