Al-Azhar Grand Imam (GI), Prof. Ahmad al-Tayyeb said that the world today is thirsty for peace more than ever before, due to the aggression, massacres and mass extermination we witness on a daily basis, which have destroyed the concept of peace and made it an unattainable dream. He stressed that the greatest wish today is for peace to prevail in the region, and even in the whole world, and to end the suffering of the Palestinian people and obtain their rights to establish their independent state and live in peace and security, as is the case with most peoples of the world.

During his reception of Dr. Syafruddin Kambo, Chairman of the Global Peace Foundation in Indonesia, and his accompanying delegation, the Grand Imam pointed out that Al-Azhar Al-Sharif bears the pains and challenges of the Islamic world, and strives to unite the nation and reform the Islamic fold from within through holding an Islamic-Islamic dialogue to present to the world a single Islamic voice that represents everyone and accommodates everyone. He explained that Al-Azhar is well aware of the difficulty of this task due to some extremist doctrines that feed on division and discord between schools of Islamic thought and spreading sedition among Muslims, which is what the Holy Quran warns us against. Almighty Allh says, “Hold firmly together to the rope of Allah and do not be divided.” (Qur’an, 3:103), and says, “Do not dispute with one another, or you would be discouraged and weakened” (Qur’an, 8:46). He stressed that what makes us cling to hope and motivates us to continue is our awareness of the importance of this issue and its vitality for the future of the Islamic nation.

The Grand Imam stressed the importance of education in confronting the challenges facing the nation. He expressed his hope for forming a curriculum that would be spread to the countries of the Islamic world, concerned with educating the Muslim children and raising their awareness of the contemporary challenges facing the Islamic world, instilling in them the values of Islamic unity, and refuting the allegations on which extremist sects are based in sowing discord among Muslims.

Dr. Syafruddin Kambo conveyed the greetings of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, His Excellency, Prabowo Subianto, to His Eminence the Grand Imam, and his wishes for his continued health and wellness, and success in serving the causes of Islam and Muslims. He stressed that the Indonesian people feel proud to belong to Al-Azhar Al-Sharif in terms of methodology and education, and they hold Al-Azhar scholars in great esteem. Dr. Kambo added that Al-Azhar graduates in Indonesia enjoy a good reputation and are present in various leadership positions in the country, and that they participate in promoting Indonesia’s renaissance and progress.
