Grand Imam At-Tayyeb succeeded in bringing life back to the Al-Azhar Ruwaqs, study circles and sessions, advocacy councils and weekly lectures located in the courtyards of Al-Azhar Mosque. They aimed at presenting religious knowledge, according to Al-Azhar’s moderate approach, to Egyptians and foreigners alike, including disciplines like jurisprudence, Hadith, Qur’anic Exegesis, jurisprudence on worship acts, and transactions, Islamic heritage, and canonical works constantly taught in these sessions throughout the year. These free-of-charge classes are conducted by distinguished scholars of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif.
The Grand Imam’s vision to reactivating the Al-Azhar Ruwaqs is meant to sustain the historical leadership of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif, consolidating its moderate approach as a local and global religious reference. It is also meant to provide a haven for students of Islamic sciences and those who are keen to learn more about religious and secular matters.
In parallel, during the reign of Imam At-Tayyeb, Al-Azhar Mosque witnessed the largest restoration process in its history through a grant from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The grant covered a thorough restoration process, including a sweeping modernizing of the infrastructure of Al-Azhar Mosque, including floors, mattresses, lighting, water, sewage, firefighting, ventilation, and sound systems. This is done in accordance with the latest international standards, and with materials like those used in the Grand Mosque in Macca, taking into account the archaeological nature of the mosque. So, all the steps are taken under the full supervision of the Ministry of Antiquities. All stages of restoration were documented, with a comprehensive file dedicated for every stone, pillar, and corner. Besides, the previous status of the mosque, during and after the restoration process was fully documented. The restoration work was inaugurated on March 6, 2018, in the presence of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
