Instatement of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar through election
Since his official instatement, the Grand Imam has been keen to maintain independence of Al-Azhar Ash-Sharif. So, as soon as he had the chance, he proposed to the then ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces a draft amendment to Al-Azhar Law. Accordingly, Decree-Law No. 13 of 2012 was issued on January 19, amending Al-Azhar Law No. 103 of (1961). This amendment secured certain powers for the Al-Azhar institution, foremost of which is that it made the instatement of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar a process to be done through an election from the Council of Senior Scholars, knowing that Grand Imam used to be appointed by the President of the Republic.
